Letters to My Children

I am participating in my second blog circle  this year, and again I am doing this with a group of fabulous women from the Clickin Moms Forum; this one is entitled Letters to My Children, and yep, as you’ve guessed I am writing a letter to one of my kids each month, accompanied by pictures of course.  Normally when I do things with my kids, it’s in order of birth, from oldest to youngest; recently my youngest informed me,”that’s not fair” because he’s always last. So, just for him I’m switching things up, and starting with my middle child:)

Dearest Ryan,

It is the dead of winter, but no one would know it if they asked you what you did today.  You would have to respond by saying that you played basketball, rode your scooter (and your skateboard and your rollerblades; )  a mere 32 degrees cannot stop you from doing what you love.  And anyone who knows you, would know that you have to be doing something at ALL times.  You have to be active.  So our basement has turned into your basketball court (only because  you’ve been yelled at too many times for playing in the living room).  The basement also serves as your skatepark, where you basically use anything you own with wheels.  So when it’s warm enough (because only in Chicago can you call 32 degrees warm enough), we’ll head outside and let you do what it is that you love.

Anything physical comes so unbelievably easy to you, the first time you put on your rollerblades, you just took off, as if you had been skating for years.  It’s really amazing, but you’re like that with everything you try… It’s funny, because when you were small, we knew it even then. I remember watching you throw a baseball at about two, and I immediately knew that you’d be good at baseball. And it turns out that all of the sports you play, you just seem to excel at them…. soccer, basketball, baseball…. you play your heart out each and every game.  I’m half-tempted to sign you up for water polo to see how you could do (kidding… sort of).  And it’s not just that you are good at playing, but you love it, after a game, you are on cloud nine, re-telling all the highlights, and you always have the biggest smile on your face.  You enjoy every single second of it, and that is what I love the most.  It’s not that you are good at these things, that makes me happy, but these are the things that bring you joy…. and that is my hope for your childhood, that one day, when you look back you’ll remember how happy you were.

As the first little boy that stole my heart, I couldn’t be prouder of you.

I love you to the moon and back Ryan Matthew. xoxo

Love,

Mommy

The Way I View…Love

This month’s theme for the blog circle is The Way I View Love.  Love to me is the little things that no one even notices you do for them,  and it’s also the big things.  The things you wouldn’t be able to get through without someone’s help.  Love is family.  And if I’m lucky, my kids will get what we’re trying to teach them;  and they will always be there for each other in good times and in bad, because that is what you do when you truly love someone.

Here are a few of my visions of love…

Love is … brothers having fun

Love is… the excitement of another turn

Love is… pure joy (even in full sun)

Love is… having fun with your family on a beautiful day

Next up in the circle is my friend, Kristen Ryan, please follow the circle to see how Kristen views love.

Kristen Lester - Love these shots, Dana! You’ve captured some great memories for them.

Kristen - Love these images Dana! Fabulous shots in the bright sunshine and you can feel the love of family in these images. How fabulous for them to look back on these years from now and see how much fun they were having together!

aimee - Dana, I love the way you captured such a fun family day. I live for days like these. Your words are so true. Beautiful!

Dani - Dana, these are too darling! I love his face in the second one, and her cute smile.

Lisa Benemelis - I love these, Dana. Beautiful images of your family enjoying a fun day filled with love and joy. <3

Allison McSorley - Dana, your images are really fantastic! You were able clearly to illustrate “love” through everyday moments, like sledding on a random winter day, which is what makes these images so compelling to me.

Beth Simpkins - Love your intro Dani, and I’m sure that your children are going to get exactly what you are teaching them one day! I love how you’ve approached this month by showing us the love for family and the moments we share together. The expression of your little guy in the 3rd one is awesome- so full of excitement!!

kara - dana, i love the way you captured their excitement and the pure joy of a snow day. love all of that negative space in that first one.

The Way I View… New Beginnings

I have the honor of participating in a personal project with some very talented photographers I’ve met through participating in the Clickin’ Moms forum.  Each month we will have a new theme, and “the way I  view it”  I am very excited to be a part of this group of amazing women. Our first theme, is “New Beginnings.”   I’m not one that handles change well… so new beginnings tend to throw me for a loop.  But, in the past year, a lot has changed, and I’ve decided to take the turning lemons into lemonade approach.  Up until this past summer, I was a working Mom; my new beginning, is the journey of being a stay-at-home Mom, and the challenges, and joy in all the little things that come with my new job title.  I’m working on taking in the little moments, like pancakes on a Monday morning, and hanging out with my youngest after the older two have gone to school.  It’s so much more rewarding spending my days with people that really matter… and making memories with my family.

Next up in the blog circle is my very talented friend, Lisa Benemelis, http://www.lisabenemelis.com/2013/01/29/the-way-i-view-new-beginnings/ .  Lisa is not only an amazing photographer, with a masterful use of light, but she is one of the kindest, most genuine people I know, and I think you’d love getting to know her too.
