Juliana’s First Communion

A week after my own daughter’s First Communion I photographed sweet Juliana’s First Communion.  From the ceremony through the reception, you could feel just how loved Juliana is by her parents, grandparents, friends and family.  Here is a peak into her  special day…

Letters to Our Children

Once again, it’s time for my monthly letter to our children blog circle.  This month I am writing to my oldest, my sweet girl.  I hope once you are done you will follow the circle around and take a look at what all of the other talented ladies have to say.

Dear Livie,

This is a very big important time for you, this past weekend you made your First Holy Communion.  When I think about it, I can’t believe that you are old enough to be making your First Communion, I still think of you as my baby, my little girl with the pigtails and the chubby cheeks.  You have grown into a sweet, kind and genuinely caring girl.  I could not be prouder of you.  You have such a heart, and you put yourself out there, which in turn means you are easily hurt, and I hate to see that.  I think because you are so caring, you don’t understand when people are mean or rude, and are it genuinely upsets you.  I think what I worry the most about you is that someone will break your spirit.  I wish I could just put a big bubble around you to protect you from everything, but I know I cannot, and I know that no matter what, you will always be ok.  Don’t ever let anyone ever change your heart.

xoxo,

Mommy

Now please take a few moments to follow the circle around to see what my friend, the extremely talented, Sarah of Sunshine Lane Photography has to say.

Danika - What a heartfelt letter <3 It's so hard to watch our little ones get hurt when they put themselves out there, but it sounds like she's such a sweet girl. I love the movement you captured in your image and the quote too!

The Way I View… Dessert

It’s blog circle time again, and this month our theme is How I View Dessert.  Dessert is kind of a double edged sword.  It’s oh, so good, and yet (generally), oh so bad for you.  I like to bake, and when it’s time for a family party… 99% of the time, I’m asked to bring a dessert.  So while I do love to try out new recipes, I’m also trying to teach my kids that dessert doesn’t always have to be a decadent, not very good for you treat… I’m trying… but that doesn’t mean they necessarily buy what I’m selling!

There’s nothing quite like a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting

But these really are pretty great too…

Now please follow the circle around to the very talented, Kristen of Harley Madison Photography to see how she views dessert!

Kristen - Yum! Cupcakes! But I agree strawberries are delicious too :) Love your daughter’s expression. She’s looking so grown up! Wonderful images and perspectives!

Kristen Lester - Oh, boy! I LOVE cupcakes. Even more than Rice Krispie Treats. And I LOVE red velvet cake. I love the perspectives!

Katrina - Love these, Dana! The images are gorgeous, and the cupcakes look delicious! My kids are pretty good about eating (and loving) fruit, but I’m pretty sure they’d pick the cupcake if given a choice.

Lisa Benemelis - Homemade red velvet cupcakes…I would be in heaven!! Yumm! Beautiful images and I love the different perspectives you took.

Tracy - Lovely images, Dana! My 9-year-old would like to come over and enjoy the red velvet cupcake! My 2-year-old screamed “stah-bewees!” for the strawberries, so you have two little fans over here. I love the shot of your daughter eating the berry. The blue nails make it for me (lovely composition and light too)!!!

kara - dana, i love all of your perspectives. somehow i only recently discovered red velvet cake and your cupcakes looks delicious! i think i struggled some with this challenge because we don’t eat a ton of desserts either–so the strawberries look just as yummy to me!

Beth Simpkins - The light is beautiful in theses Dana! You made your strawberries look just as yummy as the cupcake. I’m afraid I’m a sucker for cupcakes though and would end up picking those 😉 Your little girl is such a cute little model too. I’m sure she didn’t mind this photo shoot too much!

Allison - I love red velvet cupcakes, too! Delicious! What a great interpretation of this month’s theme!

Letters to my Children

This is the second month I am participating in the Letters to My Children blog circle.  It is filled with some really talented photographers, and people whose work I admire, so take a few minutes to make your way through the circle and check out all of the eye candy.  This month, I am writing to my youngest, he often complains that since he’s the smallest he’s always last for everything…. not this time buddy… you’re moving up to second out of three this time:)

Dearest Michael,

Whenever people talk about you, or try to describe you, they always say some version of, “he’s such a character.”  And are you ever.  You are by far the funniest kid I know.  The way you talk, your body language and mannerisms, the facial expressions…. you are one in a million buddy.  I’m pretty sure that you are the only four year old that works the word “actually” into every conversation you have.

Your current interests are: running, your “guys” (i.e. batman, transformer action figures etc.), and some version of video games (DS, iPad, Wii)… any of them will hold your attention for quite some time, and you love doing all of them equally.  I am also quite certain you are the only four year old who wants to take “Olympic Running”

You are a sweet, kind and caring boy, and there isn’t a thing I would change about you.  I love listening to you up in your room setting up battles with your guys…. sometimes the battles last hours, and your room is destroyed up there, but I know, that the louder the booms, and crashes the more fun you are having.

I love you to the moon and back, Michael Joseph

xoxo

Corinne - Dana- What a gorgeous little man! I can almost hear the bumps and see the rescuing going on! I have a feeling your little man and mine would get along, very well! Beautiful images, that laughing one is heart melting.

Cassandra - My little guy is a similar age and gosh the imagination is fantastic hey! I can really imagine the scene you share with the noises and battles!! So much fun!! And your Michael has a seriously cute smile!

elaina mortali - Love the pictures of him playing with his “guys”..I so look forward to that with my now 2 yr old…so sweet!

The Way I View… light and shadows

This is the third month I am participating in a blog circle with some amazing photographers from the Clickin’ Moms forum, and this month we are focusing on The Way I View Light and Shadows.  I used to think, that I wanted brightly lit pictures all the time.  And while there is nothing wrong with flat lighting, and it definitely has it’s place,  once I learned how to use the light to shape peoples features, give them dimension, and to tell a story… I was hooked.  I constantly find myself looking for little pockets of light to shoot in, or find myself manipulating the light to achieve the looks I want… especially in the long winter moths when I limited to the light I have here in my house.  While there is no particular reason behind the following photos, they all are deliberate in their use of light, and I hope you’ll enjoy them as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Now please follow the circle around to my talented friend, Dani Vest to see how she views light and shadows.

Kristen - Dana! I love your use of dramatic light and these certainly don’t disappoint! Wow! Gorgeous work. The ones of your son are so fitting to what you have described of him and fabulous low light. And your daughter, just beautiful! That first one takes me breath away especially!

Kristen Lester - Great use of light and shadows! I even see a RT in the first pic! :-)

Lisa Benemelis - These are all beautiful, Dana. The first one is stunning. I love everything about it – all the way down to how the light is illuminating her newly cut hair. What a beautiful thing she did in donating her locks for charity. <3

Allison - Dana, these are just absolutely beautiful! That first one is stunning. I hope you are printing it for yourself! And the Superman series is just too cute, with some amazing light as an added bonus!

Katrinaa - Dana, these are all gorgeous! I love the way you achieved light fall off and the way the light so perfectly illuminates details and highlights shape. Really beautiful!

Dani - Amazing Dana. That last one is absolutely stunning. I adore the small pops of color against the shadows!!!

kara - dana, i always love your b/w conversions. you use dramatic light so well! the first one is stunning! and little boys in capes get me every.single.time.
